# Attribution in HubSpot: which channels actually create your deals?

A B2B buyer reads an article, sees a LinkedIn ad, comes back through Google, downloads a guide and finally books a meeting after an email. Which channel should get the credit? Attribution is about distributing the value of a deal across the touchpoints that led to it. HubSpot makes it possible, if the foundation is right.

**In short:** Attribution in HubSpot connects marketing touchpoints, such as page views, forms, emails and ad clicks, to contacts, deals and revenue. You can choose different models, from first touch and last touch to linear, U shaped and W shaped. No model is perfect, so use several and look at trends rather than exact numbers.

## Which attribution models are there?

| Model | How value is distributed | Good for |
| --- | --- | --- |
| First touch | Everything to the first touchpoint | What creates awareness? |
| Last touch | Everything to the last touchpoint | What closes the deal? |
| Linear | Equally to all | The full picture |
| U shaped | Most to first touch and conversion to lead | Lead generation |
| W shaped | Most to first touch, lead and deal created | B2B with longer sales cycles |
| Time decay | More to touchpoints close to the deal | Short sales cycles |

## Which reports are there in HubSpot?

- **Contact creation**: which channels and pages create new contacts?
- **Deal creation**: which touchpoints led to deals being created?
- **Revenue**: which channels and campaigns contribute to closed revenue?

Contact attribution is included in Professional, while deal and revenue attribution require Enterprise.

## Prerequisites for reliable attribution

1. **The tracking code** on every page, including landing pages outside HubSpot.
2. **Connected ad accounts** for [LinkedIn](https://leadlabs.se/en/insights/hubspot-linkedin-ads?hsLang=en) and [Google](https://leadlabs.se/en/insights/hubspot-google-ads?hsLang=en).
3. **UTM parameters** on links from external channels.
4. **Contacts associated with deals**, otherwise there is nothing to attribute.
5. **Cookie consent** affects how much can be tracked. Expect some data to always be missing.

## How to use attribution wisely

- Compare several models. If a channel is strong in all of them, it is probably important.
- Look at trends over time rather than exact numbers.
- Combine with self reported attribution: ask "How did you hear about us?" in your forms.
- Remember what does not show up: podcasts, referrals and AI answers.

## Frequently asked questions about attribution in HubSpot

### What is attribution in HubSpot?

Attribution in HubSpot connects marketing touchpoints to contacts, deals and revenue and distributes the value according to a chosen model, so you can see which channels contribute.

### Which attribution model should you choose?

For B2B with longer sales cycles, W shaped or linear is often a good starting point. Compare with first and last touch to see the full picture.

### Which edition is required for attribution in HubSpot?

Contact attribution is included in Professional. Deal and revenue attribution require Enterprise.

### Why are touchpoints missing from attribution?

Common reasons are that the visitor has not accepted cookies, the tracking code is missing on some pages, links lack UTM parameters or contacts are not associated with deals.

### Can you measure traffic from ChatGPT in attribution?

Visits through links in AI services show up as referral traffic and can be included in attribution. Influence from AI answers without clicks, however, does not show up, so complement with self reported attribution.

## Summary

Attribution in HubSpot gives a much better picture of what creates deals, but no model is perfect. Secure the foundation with tracking and connected data, compare several models and use the numbers to make better decisions.
